I originally made this for r/HollowKnightMemes (which you should totally check out, by the way), but I thought it might be worth sharing here, just in case someone has been struggling with Nightmare King Grimm in Godhome (like if it was a long time since someone fought NKG to complete the ritual, or if someone took the banishment ending).
The charm build I roll with is Quick Focus, Deep Focus, Shape of Unn, Grubsong, Nailmaster's Glory. As you can see in the video, I got hit somewhat frequently, but was able to heal back to full rather easily during the Fire Bat, Flame Pillar, and Ground Spike attacks, as well as during staggers. Just be careful when healing during the Flame Pillar attack, as if you don't time it right, you'll be locked in place right as a pillar is about to appear under you. Also worth noting is that after recording the video, I learned that you can just cancel the Nail Art charge by Focusing, so while it takes a bit of finger gymnastics, it's possible to avoid floundering around when you want to heal but have a Nail Art on deck. You can witness said floundering whenever I used Great Slash for seemingly no reason in the video.
As for how to actually hit Grimm...
Fire Bat
- Jump while moving towards Grimm, dash, and then Dash Slash. You'll usually have time to land a regular hit or two after the Dash Slash.
Drill Dive
- Dash (I don't think the direction matters), jump while continuing to move in that direction, and Great Slash as Grimm passes under you. Great Slash's hitbox lasts long enough that it should hit Grimm as he stands up, and it hangs you in the air long enough that you won't fall into the fire trail.
Dash Uppercut
- Dash away from Grimm, then immediately turn around Great Slash him. To avoid the fire he drops, just stand still after the Great Slash. The fire will come close, but it shouldn't hit you. Dealing with this attack in this way is rather new for me; I used to just Shadow Dash through him and accept that I wouldn't hit him. If you find striking him during this attack too difficult and opt for the easier Shadow Dash strategy, once you've dashed through Grimm, immediately dash back and stand still to avoid the dropped fire.
Flame Pillar
- Pretty simple. Just slowly approach Grimm and hit him with a Great Slash, and a few normal slashes if you can. If you want to deal more damage at the cost of Soul, Abyss Shriek will work here as well, but if you're as clumsy as I am, you'll want to hold onto that Soul for healing.
Ground Spike and Pufferfish
- Not much to say here, since you can't hit him during these attacks. Well, technically, you can hit Grimm with spells during the Pufferfish attack, but it's risky and uses Soul, so I don't recommend it with this build.
That's all I have to say. I hope this was helpful and/or entertaining.
