Cannabis is a powerful substance with many benefits and detriments. Like any tool, it can be used skillfully in the correct context to achieve amazing feats and improve your life and the world be live in. Like any tool, it can be used recklessly in the wrong context to harm yourself and destroy your environment. Imagine a hammer, swung well to drive the nail, or flailed drunkenly to demolish a home.
For a long time SWIM has struggled to negotiate a healthy relationship with cannabis, often falling into excessively frequent and habitual use patterns, even in the face of negative consequences. Despite the unpleasant side effects, SWIM kept coming back, enthralled by moments of euphoria and lucidity, creativity and relief.
After a week of cleansing (sober, celibate, and simple whole mostly plant foods), I asked an old hippie about how to dance with the plant. He told SWIM that the best way to use cannabis is in conjunction with a practice such as yoga or art. Once you start to learn how powerful cannabis can be as a tool and facilitator of your purposes, the idea of just smoking and sitting around bullshitting will naturally become abhorrent. I think his advice is true.
