Just unsubbed from /r/TravisScott

Let me preface this my saying that my relationship with Travis Scott’s music has been extremely weird. I love Astro world, rodeo, and many of his features yet I just have trouble getting too invested in the rest of his career. At his best Travis is a fantastic curator of tastes, excutive producing genre defining masterpieces, but it his worst, he’s bad. While my opinion is far more negative than the average Travis fan, I still thought it would be fun to subscribe to his subreddit. It was a bad idea

For context, I started listening to Travis when Rodeo was about a month old and subscribed to the subreddit in the Astroworld hype. I am also on most of the other big rapper subreddits, all of which I am staying subscribed to, unlike Travis Scott.

First issue is infighting. It is almost impossible to see a post on the subreddit that doesn’t have a comment that isn’t bashing a part of the fan base, usually a bunch of older fans complaining about him getting more fans off of rodeo, and especially making fun of those who became fans thanks to his first number one hit, Sicko Mode, along with constant complaints that the new fans made his next tour a stadium tour. While I do understand the mentality, I just find it infuriating that you cannot go anywhere without hearing about how bad newer fans are, especially after seeing many fandoms I was a part of die thanks to fan divides. It just isn’t very fun.

That being said, I really hate how untwined the subreddit got by hypebeast culture. There are periods where the sub seemed to focus more on shoes than the music. I just find it really annoying when people just post pictures of cactus jack shoes, and id his outfit. While I know that everyone has different hobbies, and I am probably just as annoying trying to ID all the rollercoasters used in Astroworld era promotional art, just too much is too much, and for the first time in my life, I have considered siding with the people who hate new fans, especially when the discourse for a good week revolves around Travis giving a fan his pair of shoes during a concert.

Then we have the shitposts. I usually love these, but there is some air of forgetability to those on /r/Travisscott. Most of them borrow formats from the other hip hop subreddits, yet my reddit feed seems to give them to me last, so I usually go into shitposts having seen the same joke but Kanye, Frank Ocean and Brockhampton themed before it gets to Travis’s turn, making it all feel all around bleh. Also, the lyrics are not as memable or exploitable as pretty much every artist in the genre, so you have no decent lyric jokes. That and the sub seems soo weirdly protective that pretty much all memes that can be seen as shots at the artist just do not exist, a sharp contrast from my favorites /r/Kanye and /r/weezer who loves to clown on the artists as much as they love to praise them. It just feels dead and hallow compared to literally every other music subreddit.

Next up is the fandom beefs. Literally every single artist sub has one. Kanye vs Drake, Frank ocean vs Chris Brown, it is a major part of fandom culture, and can provide some fun laughs. The thing is the beefs on /r/Travisscott are just lacking. Fandom beefs are fun cause they correlate with artist beefs, and the fact that the artists and their affiliates throw shots at the target gives seemingly pointless beefs an odd sense of community. Sadly, Travis Scott had the two most boring beefs in music history. Nicki took shots at Travis. Travis didn’t respond, and her career was on a sharp decline when this happened. Instead of feeling like a humorous beef between two hip hop titans, it felt like a big fan base attacking an ant that could not respond. Mundane, not fun, and just far from interesting. Even worse is the new Ariana grande beef. I am not the most versed on Travis lore, so I might be wrong, yet the beef was originally uninitiated by either artist, and was just the Travis Scott community getting angry because Ariana fans were trying to compare sweetener to Astroworld. The posts that came out of it were boring, as the joke was just boosting twitter polls so Travis won. The motives are probably that Ariana’s fan base is annoying, and if that is the case, it is the perfect clash of titans, as Ariana’s fan base makes me want to quit Twitter, and Travis’s fan base makes me wish that I was off all social media so I can just listen to Astroworld in peace.

The final straw though, is everyone reading too into hints on potential new Travis. I understand getting excited for the track list of an affiliate, of messages where collabs are hinted but Travis fans take it to a whole new level. Whenever a new song or album is announced by any artist, it is a race to see who can type “I can see Travis on this” first. It is just annoying, and it seems like an entitled parent trying to politic their annoying son that nobody likes into every single party, opertunity, position and event. While I love Travis, I understand that too much of him would be the worst possible thing for his career, whether it is via oversaturation, creative burnout, the health of his voice ext. That is the case for literally every artist, and with the exception of brockhampton, E40, and maybe snails house, there is absolutely nobody who would benefit by putting out too much work in a short time. My final straw was a call for more Travis on the most recent Yhandi snippet. . That moment broke me because I listened to it over 100 times, being increasingly sure that Travis’s voice and delivery would sound like nails on a chalk board over that snippet no matter the quality of that verse. It could be the greatest verse in all of hip hop history, yet it just would sound awful on that beat.

This is THE ENDS of my time on/r/Travisscott. I CAN TELL that it is IMPOSSIBLE for a subreddit to have this much WASTED potential, and that a sub for someone I respect soo much can give me soo much pain when I browse Reddit THROUGH THE LATE NIGHT. I CANT SAY that this is a good subreddit, and now it is my time to GO.

SICKO MODE

TLDR, Extremely annoying fan base that loves to infight, go off topic, pick the worst beefs, and politic their favorite rapper onto everything without thinking of how it would work out
