I'm attempting to make Ferric chloride as per the nurdrage instructions here. https://youtu.be/43Xsh9J7S-g
The issue is that I am using Rhodes American brand 0000 steel wool as suggested as an alternative to boiling nails. I'm also using a more dilute form (31% HCL) ( 37% is what NurdRage is using ).
I am making a large batch, as I'm intending to make enough to do metal etching art. I used 450ml 31% HCL acid. 75g of steelwool. I have not gotten to the oxidizing step yet. I stopped because I have a thick milky pastel green sludge in the bottom of the reaction.
I'm concerned that the thin coating of mineral oil or machine oil that steel wool is coated in has somehow spoiled the batch. Should I start over and try to degrease the steelwool with dawn? Acetone? Turpentine?
Might the liquid portion be salvageable if I separate it from the sludge? Should I go ahead and add the peroxide and see if the sludge clears up?
If I do start over with say, 300ml of 31% HCL, how much steelwool should I actually use this time? Is it okay to use the steelwool if it rusts up after degreasing and drying?
Sorry for the half dozen questions stuck in here. I'm just looking for lots of advice on how to precede.
