So reveal season didn't start yet after all, guess I'll step in with some more cards then.
This time around I want to start a discussion about set themes. (Or perhaps set gimmicks would be more appropriate) Specifically in the style that Alterplane has done it's theme by giving every class one legendary of that theme/gimmick.
The theme that I came up with for this set of custom cards is dual class cards!
Here's the cards.
An interesting effect that a theme like this would have is that every class essentially gets 3 legendaries but you still only have to collect two. Not the intention but a neat side effect I suppose.
An important aspect about making multiclass cards is that all the cards need to share flavour with both the classes they're usable in. Unlike Cygames I can't easily commission new art to nail the flavour where necessary but I did the best I could with the limited resources at my disposal.
Some notes about my intentions for the cards:
- Andorra - Forest's cards played this turn mechanic lends itself well to portalcraft and it's many cheap token followers. Both of those classes could also use a card that can be used for tempo or defensively for archetypes such as tempo forest, midrange puppets, control forest and lishenna portal.
- Natsuki - Both Sword and Forest enjoy filling the board and buffing it up (even if the buff part has mostly fallen flat for sword it's still techincally part of their identity) and Natsuki let's both classes do just that.
- Otari - Rune obviously likes to cast spells, but even if we don't see it much in the game's compatitive environment, dragon too likes playing non-follower cards, which of course includes casting spells. Otari allows both classes access to more cheap spells for their respective synergies. On top of that the cost reduction on the evolve can be used on cards like Zooey in the same non-follower archetype or on Raio in a spellboost deck to cheat him out a turn earlier, on top of the obvious usage of using it on the 1 cost spells Otari gives you himself.
- Immortal Soul Dragon - A big dragon that summons another big dragon? perfect for fulfilling Hastewing's Invocation condition while at the same time keeping you save after ramping him out. But of course ramping is not the only way to cheat out this big boy, Shadowcraft has their own way of handling things. In my mini expansion set I made a 12 drop for shadow but we're still missing a good 8 drop, since a 6/6 ambush isn't that impressive and rather slow. Immortal Soul Dragon however will be a big hurdly for your opponent hopefully buying you enough times that the big boys you summon can actually be relevant.
- Shiva - I'm sure you can tell, but Shiva is essentially Atomy 2 Electric Boogaloo. The twist this time around is that he's smaller, however he resummons what he destroys, letting you reuse last words in a similar style to Urd but for your entire board. Beeing only 5 cost does mean he's more flexible however, giving him more applications than just early game cheese. On top of that, destroying your own stuff isn't just an activity enjoyed by Shadowcraft. Havencraft too enjoys destroying their amulets in order to get off their last words effects earlier and with Shiva in particular, potentially even multiple times.
- Charm Whip Vampire -Aggro bats ahoi! This little lady gives you plenty of incentive to keep flooding your board with bats (or serpents technically if there were any in rotation you'd want to use) giving the deck more reach with Storm on evolve. But not only blood likes to flood the board with 1 cost tokens, sword quite enjoys it aswell. This card could, and quite probably would, single handedly make aggro sword a thing again in rotation.
- Fal - Storm Haven support, but only if you work for it. While the 5 countdown might be workable if you actually play her on curve, if you play her any later it would take quite long for the Fallen Angels to come out naturally, encouraging using countdown reduction with cards like hallowed dogma or Hind, if not straight up destruction with Shiva, to better make use of these amulets. At this point you might be wondering what a high countdown amulet does for blood. The answer is Purson. I suppose you could also just use it in vengeance blood for more face damage but that's the boring answer. With a coundown of 5 this amulet will stick around for a turn 8 purson if you play Fal turn 4 or later, not only giving you the extra pull from Purson, but also still giving you an additional 4/4 storm! Maybe this can actually make Purson worthwhile.
- Thetis - I really feel like Portal's duplication theme could be build upon a little more. Speaking of which, you know what other class has a card that can duplicate cards? That's right! It's Rune. (Unbodied Witch) That duplicating your tokens in portalcraft is strong should come to no surprise given the popularity of Hamelin in quite literally every portal deck, however, I would argue that duplicating cheap spells in rune can be just as useful to more reliably spellboost your spellboostable cards. Getting two more insights can go a long way.
There you have it. What do you guys think? Would you like to see a theme like this in a future expansion? What other themes/gimmicks would you like to see in the future? Also, if you've seen my recent post about my custom mini expansion I would like to know if you prefer me spelling out my thoughts on the different cards like I did this time, or if you like it better when I leave things up for you guys to figure out like I did last time?
