My Review of Hollow Knight

So I've recently finished hollow knight, and i haven't gotten every single ending yet, but I've gotten the main ones so i think that I'm able to give my comprehensive review of the game.

First off, the gameplay.

when you start off the game you quickly get used to the controls, and the controls feel really nice. the jumping mechanic is a little jarring at first, what with the jump just suddenly stopping when you let go of the jump button, but you quickly get used to it. the game doesn't tell you, but you learn as you go that you can slash up and down, and pogo on top of enemys. i love the pogo mechanic, as it brings another layer to the combat, and makes it much more dynamic, and i also really like the soul mechanic for the same reason. the games charm system is really nice, giving you upgrades as you go and then giving you more slots to hold more charms. you can experiment with different charms and find which ones you like the most. I really like the progression system in the game. you find areas that you can't get through, and then you take note of them and come back when you get an ability that helps you get past it. I really love the abilitys that the game gives you. in some games, such as Zelda, an item maybe has some extra functionality, but is mostly just serves as a key to let you get past a certain obstacle. while the upgrades in hollow knight are like that to a degree, every upgrade you get gives you more mobility, making the core gameplay change. The game starts out really easy to get you into it, then ramps up as you go along. the spells and nail arts the game gives you i feel could have been handled better, since I've never used one in combat, and when i have they seem to be very unhelpful, sometimes doing more harm than good.

Next the bosses.

One gripe i have with this game is the difficulty of the bosses, and how inconsistent it is. Most of the bosses are really easy, usually only taking one to three trys to beat. however sometimes all of a sudden the game just jumps up and you come across a boss that takes you ten to thirty tries to beat. I don't mind bosses like NKG and Radiance being difficult, because they have a good reason to be difficult, and are meant to be incredibly hard bosses. I really like the bosses in general though, as they are really well designed and (sometimes) provide a good amount of challenge.

Music

The music of this game never stood out to me. i mean its good, but never anything that blew me away. i mean that's not surprising as their has only been 2 games where the music was so good i actually wanted to listen to it over and over and i felt was masterfully designed. the only music i really liked was Grimm's themes.

The Feel of the game.

I absolutely adore the feel of this game. the game is so dark and depressing, yet doesn't leave you depressed. it just has a tone of sadness over the whole game, and the memory of a world once great. When i went through the game i was always so excited to see the next NPC. The NPCs are really engaging and masterfully indirectly tell the story, while just being plain interesting

The story

The story of the game was really confusing, but i don't think thats a bad thing. it gave me just enough information so i understood what was happening, but still left me being really confused. ill have to watch some theorys on this game later.

i want to dedicate a segment to godhome, because i loved this part of the game so much. i know a lot of people really didn't like this part of the game, but i really liked it. Yes its brutally difficult, but thats the point. its meant to be the ultimate challenge after you've already beat everything else. im half looking forward to and half dreading doing the pantheon of hallownest with all bindings. i loved the hall of gods, and being able to fight each boss on radient difficulty and knocking them off a list. and it even provides new bosses.

Overall, this is one of the best games ive ever played. is it even a third as good as undertale? no, not at all. but the day that happens is the day deltarune is fully out, and no other game will ever succeed it. its probably in my top 5 games of all time, and i would definitely recommend this game to anyone. even if you don't like this style of game, you'll probably still like Hollow Knight. i never played metrodvanias before this, but i still loved it. on a scale of one to ten, id give it a three. not because its bad mind you, but because thats the only way i can rate it. if i gave it a higher score that would make it seem like its nearly as good as undertale, and its not even close at all.
