r/memes. Ahh, once a pioneer of memes. Now a haven for memes reposted web-wide. There is some, but very little, OC on there. However, the memes are often of good quality. Usually where a popular meme goes at the end of its lifecycle before death.
r/dankmemes. Once a station for 4 channers to drop their dank 2016 memes into reddit; t'was the hub of the Dank Memebrian era. Now it's so aggressively moderated and full of normies that its quality has severely declined. This and the 4 chan quarantine have begun a new era (Post-Memebrian); for a meme to stay fresh, it must either be too small to go under a normie radar, be niche or obscure enough so that other normies won't understand it or be edgy enough so that teachers, parents, children, grandmas and corporations steer clear of it.
r/BlackPeopleTwitter. Weirdly, this is kind of a new meme powerhouse. It likely inspired the text before image format that overthrew the impact font image macro, and has given us a huge range of Twitter meme formats.
r/EdgyMemes. The other main source of non-niche memes on reddit now. The ones that aren't too offensive to not enjoy but just enough so that normies won't go near them. One of the best places for non-niche memes.
r/OffensiveMemes. Edgy memes gone too far. Lampshading won't help you here. Technically speaking, the memes here are very dank, but too offensive to appreciate.
r/darkmemes. It's basically just edgy memes branded as r/OffensiveMemes.
r/AdviceAnimals. A migrant camp of Facebook grandmas who have found reddit. No meme circluation from here to the rest of reddit whatsoever. However, for a long time this was the epitomy of all meme subs until image macros fell out of use.
r/ragecomics. Same as before, but there is a little ironic circulation.
r/The_Donald. The alt-right, Neo-Nazi, racist crowd from 4 chan and /pol/ have migrated here. Most of the Donald Trump/political memes will have spawned from here, as well as sourcing and inspiring a few edgy/offensive memes as well.
r/PrequelMemes. The biggest niche meme sub there is. There is a little normification, but it's such a big part of reddit culture and full of so much OC that its memes will never die. It certainly tops the Star Wars meme charts. However, they are also significant as the most cancerously war-happy subreddits of all. They have a burning hatred for r/SequelMemes that they have tried to satisfy from day 1 of its creation. Every single meme war on reddit, except the Roman-Anime war, has started indirectly because of them or a pre-existing conflict. That's how we ended up with the mods actually willingly declaring war on them (although tbf, it was a smaller sub at the time). Multiple times. Starting an alliance just to get rid of them. Meme World War. CIVIL WAR. ATTACKING THEIR OWN ALLY. ATTACKING ANOTHER ALLY. r/PrequelMemes is single-handedly the reason for every single war splinter sub there is, even the cancer I moderate called r/AlliedHQ. Rue 8 exists now, though, so no more brigading YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY
r/SequelMemes. I mean ,they exist literally just as an Echo Subreddit of their big brother, but... This is the runt of all the Star Wars subs. The 200k is literally just prequelmemers religiously downvoting every post there because of their unadulterated hatred. They did cobble up an Axis to the Meme Alliance... filled with all the other inferiority subs like r/catapult_memes.
r/trebuchetmemes. One dumb joke about a medieval siege weapon, get ready for a decade of shitposting. r/PrequelMemes had a no rule day when a trebuchet got upvoted to front page, sparking the Meme Alliance. Hence why we are now in this mess of splinter subs. Anyway, they're the crucial ally in the Alliance, so I'll mention it. Also, r/lotrmemes and r/GarlicBreadMemes are in a similar position.
r/PewdiepieSubmissions. ALL Pewdiepie memes come from here, obviously. A great deal of all kinds of dank Youtube-related memes can be found on their front page too. For a 9yo army, there's a surprisingly good quality of all kinds of memes there tbh.
r/BikiniBottomTwitter. An absolute staple of memes. For all memes Spongebob (who is classified as a meme God) of consistently dank quality, as well as being the powerhouse of all Spongebob meme formats.
r/memeeconomy. What this sub is now, and it once was; a place to discuss the economy and distribution of memes to keep 'em spicy and fresh, and a big part of reddit culture. It got ruined because of the investor bot.
r/wholesomememes. No complaints, everything there will make your day sweeter and danker.
r/okbuddyretard. Where people deliberately make the worst, cringiest, most normified memes that are ironically magnificent (rage comics and advice animals are not allowed, that makes it too easy). However, it provides a surprisingly consistent source of memes these days (e.g. Thanos Car, Obunga, N-Word Pass).
r/dank_memes_archive. Where people post all the memes they couldn't put on r/dankmemes because of the gay mods. Mostly shitposting, but at least you can post it without getting removed or ignored.
r/ComedyCemetery. Where people post memes or jokes they're sick of to illustrate that they're dead. The first of the "comedy" related subreddits.
r/comedyheaven. Where people either post memes that are so terrible that they're ironically pure gold, or (more commonly) people make their own memes that riff on the aforementioned so that they are ironically good.
r/ComedyNecrophilia. Where people take memes from r/ComedyCemetery and make them even worse, just as a final nail in the coffin to keep them dead.
r/comedynecromancy. Now almost based entirely on comics; takes badly told jokes that belong on and improves them by either adding, changing or removing an element.
r/gametheorymemes. Order 66 you, I'm advertising my sub and there's nothing you can do about it.
r/comedyamputation. r/comedynecromancy, but exclusively for removing elements.
r/comedyhomicide. Examples of funny posts ruined by bad captions.
r/comedynuke. Deliberately ruining a meme with so many captions that you can barely even tell what it is anymore. Only reason why grape surgery lasted for more than a week.
r/ComedyHitmen. Requesting to make/making deliberately normified, r/fellowkids standard, not even ironically funny memes or posters of memes they hate. Ugandan Knuckles, Spaghette, Fortnite, you name it. The idea is that it will sour the meme's reputation so much that it kills it; basically, assassinating the meme.
r/DeepFriedMemes. Bad memes that are only ironically funny turned oversaturated, oversharpened, overly-photoshopped, covered in meme emojis and poor-quality to make it even more ironically funny.
r/nukedmemes. Almost incomprehensibly deep-fried memes for the very, very bad ones.
r/blackholedmemes. Completely incomprehensibly deep-fried memes to the point where it's just an eyesore.
r/bigbangedmemes. As before, but to the point where it's just a colourful mess of pixels that looks like a modern art piece.
r/QuantumedMemes. Just a self-aware sub of how idiotic this chain is. Oh, and as before, to the point where it's basically either just a cool screensaver or colored static. The rabbit hole does not go any deeper. For now...
r/historymemes. Certified dank memes about history. The inspiration for many history meme subreddits.
r/fakehistoryporn. Making relevant historical captions out of funny but false pictures. However, many posts here are also memes from r/historymemes given a second life; basically, this was the sub that made r/historymemes popular.
r/me_irl. Started as a dramatic, self-depreciating representation of real-life through funny pictures, a trend started in the very first days of the internet. This became one of the first and oldest types of meme, which can still be enjoyed as However, it went haywire after a while. The lunacy of the images increased to incomprehensibility and a weird, cultish, but ultimately ironic humour emerged. Then it basically just went to inside jokes and its own memes, some of which become hugely popular (Wednesday frog, me too thanks, bamboozle etc.) and shitposting about memes.
r/surrealmemes. Images that look like memes, but usually make too little sense to have unironic comedic value. They are very, very weird. The sub has running motifs (Meme Man, Orang, Blu, Vegetal), as well as a theme of cosmology, physics, mathematics, "ascension", parallel universes and reality, as well as, surprise surprise, a surrealism to it. If memes were paintings, this is Dali's work.
r/Kowalski_Memes. Just another ad, go subscribe to them for Kowalski's analysis.
r/thanosdidnothingwrong. The powerhouse of Marvel (especially Thanos) memes, partaking in the historic Second Franchise War and infamous Thanos Snap. See also: r/ExpectedThanos, r/UnexpectedThanos.

r/absolutelynotme_irl. It's halfway between r/meirl and r/me_irl. Hard to tell how much exactly is deliberately self-uplifting because it's the opposite of r/meirl, how much is self-uplifting because of the pseudo-sarcastic/ironic nature of the sub so it's meant to be self-depreciating and how much just belongs on r/meirl, but there is definitely a mixture of all 3.
r/circlejerk. Bit of a nonsensical sub here in a similar way to r/me_irl, but with absolutely no moderation whatsoever. Basically, though, it's a shitposting satire of what makes it onto the front page and reddit in general by posting what is supposed to be stuff everyone agrees about/likes but is often deliberately random stuff to mock reddit's very very weird tastes. Not a meme sub as such, but fundamental to reddit.
r/Gamingcirclejerk. Ah, one of the timeless meme subs. EA BAD PRAISE GERALDO UPVOTES TO THE LEFT. WE LIVE IN A SOCIETY GAMERS RISE UP BOTTOM TEXT. Infamous for setting the standard as the perfect mocking of rabid fandoms as a circlejerk. You know when this stuff frequently makes it into Grandayy videos that it's a big meme.
r/MemeWorldWar. You got a war to fight, this is the historic battleground to do it.
r/AlliedHQ. Subreddit for all things concerning the Meme Alliance.
r/MemeUnitedNations. What a mistake. A pathetic attempt to try and unite meme subs and call for peace, even though they end up joining wars. Hoster of the Meme Olympic Games.
r/place. Well, not really a meme sub either, but it made reddit history.
