Humanities and Arts majors have no one to blame for their unemployment but themselves.

A lot of people from my graduating class have been very upset about being unemployed. They’ve been posting stuff on our graduating year’s facebook page calling for a socialist reform because they can’t find a nice six figure salary. I went to a pretty liberal university, known for their arts programs so it’s a pretty decent amount of people, the vast majority of whom are arts/humanities majors.

It turns out that no one in their right mind will pay you for the work you can do based on your knowledge of social justice praxis in black feminist performance arts (unless you’re teaching it of course). Who’s fault is that?

I’m not anti-arts-degrees but the statistics on employment right out the gate are horrible. At my school 46.3% of arts grads find work. These stats were available four years ago, before we even started attending classes.

Then an acquaintance who holds an arts degree had the audacity to say I was part of the problem. Part of the problem how? I worked tooth and nail for everything I have, while you were off theorizing on how to solve problems that don’t exist. Fuck right off.
