I was literally born to have this be my favourite zombie film as my birthday and it's release date are the same, albeit different years, so I am definitely born into my bias. But I would like to make the argument to you that Day of the Dead is one of the best zombie films ever made, or at least the best of the Romero films. If you wonder why I bother , it's simply because I love this film, I'll talk about it in my head, I might as well doing something useful and share it. Of course I love all of Romero's films. Well, I just liked his new ones, but love the original trilogy.
Let’s start with the score of the film. I believe the first minute speaks for itself, and shows the composer John Harrison and Romero worked brilliantly together to great such a unique score that tell you exactly what it wants you to feel in its first tone and also very reflective of the 80's. I think it's one of the best 80's scores, but that's just a personal opinion. Romero perfected his art of combining visuals and score in the very first shot of this film. I believe this is the most focused in his zombie films. He knew what he wanted. He always kind of struck me as someone who just kind of see's what happens when he films things, but he was much more specific in this film. He wanted to capture isolation. And he nails it. From the intro of the character Sara in a windowless and airtight room, to large sweeping echoey shots that capture isolation on the opposite end in open space. It just seemed that Romero had such a different focus this time and was like a scalpel in creating something great.
The story telling itself is great, the reflections on the breakdown of society I felt are smoothly written. It's a natural progression and not hand over first. In a lot of ways there are times I feel it's not even really a zombie movie, it just has zombies in it. That he was telling a story about the breakdown of human communication within ranks and it just so happened to be during the zombie apocolype. He made a great movie that just happened to be about zombies.
Lots more I could talk about but I'm feeling good with what I've done.
What do you think? I could easily understand someone saying it's the most boring one to on the opposite end.
