Yes, I know this logo sucks, I made it in five minutes because I'm can't art.
"It was an ordinary school day, like any other."
Hello there! I'm XmanP321 (as you can see, because you have the ability to read words) and I've finally gathered enough courage to make a Reddit account and properly announce this little project I've been planning for awhile now. This is the first mod of anything I've ever tried to produce, and honestly, I am super nervous. I've never used reddit before now, never done any serious coding before, so even while typing this I can almost feel the questions brewing in people's brain. "Why should I read this post? What about you and your idea is so special that I should care about it?"
Those are all admittedly good questions, and I'm not gonna act like I have the single most original idea for a mod in the universe, but I hope if you clicked on this link you'll at least hear me out and give this a shot. This is a passion project for me, in every way. I absolutely adore the original Doki Doki Literature Club, and the mods and community have only allowed that love for it to grow. What I desperately want to do is use all that love and passion and put it into something that the rest of the fanbase can enjoy just as much as I will making it. With that said...
Doki Doki Literature Club: God Syndrome is (or technically will be) a mod that centers on both answering a few of the questions the original game left us with, ("Why does the role of president give someone sentience", "What exactly is the MC if he lacks a character file?" and so on.) as well as another story exploring the idea of the MC gaining sentience himself, exploring what exactly that could cause.
Good to see she worked out of her whole \"obsessive\" phase.
Taking place after the events of the original ending, where everything is erased by Monika due to her realization that "There is no happiness in the Literature Club", the game is suddenly restored by the player thanks to the mod in question. Every character file is back in it's proper place and everything seems to run swimmingly, but when the player makes their way to the clubroom they find it completely empty outside of Sayori. Ever since she created it, nobody has actually joined the club, a fact that clearly bothers her. Compassion and sympathy ultimately win out, and MC joins the club alongside her.
Almost immediately after, the familiar faces of Yuri and Natsuki find their way to the clubroom and announce their intentions to join as well, quickly bringing the club up to it's minimum four members to become "official". However, throughout the rest of the day it's clear that the girls' haven't picked up any natural chemistry yet, and even Sayori's attempts to keep things under control don't work perfectly well because she hasn't truly gotten to know her two new members yet. Thanks to the MC's involvement and suggestions though, it quickly becomes apparent that he's the best possible choice to lead the club, and swiftly elect him as the new Club President (even Natsuki, begrudgingly). Left with no way to really back out, he takes up the role, and quickly finds out just how dangerous it can be. Slowly he begins to see beyond the Fourth Wall much like the other two presidents before him, and begins to recall his memories from the previous act...especially those relating to a certain girl in a white ribbon.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
The game's general premise relates to helping MC adjust with both of his newfound roles as President and fourth wall observer. With your help (and later the help of a certain you-know-who) he'll go about the task of bringing the club together, scheduling events and activities to get them all to feel at home in time for the festival, just a week away. At the same time though, it's your job to keep him from falling under the same fate as his two predecessors, keeping him sane under his new revelation so that he can be the one to finally bring happiness to a world that seemingly has none.
Potential Features (Subject to Change)
Eight full playable days
Playable Festival
Four endings (minimum, not including game overs or "bad endings")
Replacement to the Poem Game, focused on scheduling events for the club.
And even more as progress and planning continues!
There's no demo or download just available yet, but I should be able to get a demo of day one out before 2018 ends as long as I continue to work diligently, but sadly I'm only one person, who's also busy with schoolwork and regular work. If I had more people working on this project with me, things would hopefully be able to move just a bit faster. Which leads me to...
Work Requests
I couldn't think of a better thing to name this topic, but basically, this idea is really ambitious for me, having never used Renpy prior to this point and having just limited coding experience in general. I'm going to make a list of resources and potential workers for this mod, scaled with three tiers. First is the "need" category, things I absolutely need to get this mod out in any non-broken state. The second tier are things I'd really like to have but can work without if required. The final tier are things that would be really nice to have and would enhance the experience in some ways, but aren't needed to complete the project at all. Feel free to look this over and contact me if you're at all interested in assisting me! I'd really appreciate it!
Need
Programmers - I'm capable of writing and programming just fine to an extent, but when I get to more complicated mechanics (such as the idea for the scheduling game) I'll need people significantly better at that task than I am to keep things from breaking entirely. It could also potentially help me figure out what is actually possible so I don't try to do something Renpy just outright can't do.
Poets - Poems themselves aren't nearly as important here as they were in the original game, but they'll still be a factor, and I'm not nearly as good at poetry as I like to think I am at writing, so I'll need people who know what they're doing when it comes to that.
Writers/Idea People - I'd like to think when it comes to the actual writing and execution part, I could do it all myself, but I know for a fact that I won't be able to figure out every single tiny detail by myself in any reasonable time. It would help to have real writers to help ease the strain, but Idea People are almost defiantly a need to keep things going and have it all work at a decent pace.
Proofreaders - This should probably be self explanatory. I'm going to make mistakes. Heck, we ALL are gonna make mistakes, it's human nature. When writing what I have, I did it all in past instead of present tense and had to manually go back and fix every single line so it would be consistent with what the original game did. Proofreaders are needed to make sure no mistakes like that are ever missed.
Want
CGI Artists - While it's totally possible to create a mod and tell the story I'd like to tell with just sprites, having the ability to use new CGIs would expand the storytelling potential for this project, and add more impact to scenes when used properly.
Character/Sprite/Pose Artists - To clarify, this essentially means making new outfits for the girls when needed. This is again something that can be worked around in several ways, but having other outfits depending on context could help add more depth to the mod and give more feeling and "realism" to certain scenes.
Bonus
GUI Artists - A new, or even just slightly different look to the GUI of a mod could really help things stand out a bit, but it would really serve no purpose outside of adding more of an identity to it.
Musicians - Having new tracks available for some scenes would be absolutely amazing! It could add more of an identity to things like a new GUI would, but it could also be used to create a tone or feel that original DDLC just straight up doesn't have, if a scene requires it. It would also let the potential credits sequence stand out a bit more too.
I may have some things I want that I've missed in this particular list, but I've put down just about everything that I can think of at the moment. If possible, I might add onto it later.
If you've gotten this far, I severely hope you're at least mildly interested in my idea and how it could turn out. If you aren't well...fair enough, thanks for reading, tell me so if you'd like. If you do, then please feel free to give me your feedback! I'd love to hear how you feel about it, whether you like it or not. If you're onboard to help well...that's awesome! Thank you already! And again, contact me and we'll try and figure something out. Like I said, this is my first mod of anything EVER, so I've got a whole lot of learning to do, and I'm sure it's gonna take a lot of time to nail down.
Still, this is something I really want to do. Every time I even think about it I get excited, so if anyone here is even mildly interested? I'd call that a success. So...regardless of your thoughts, thanks for reading! I really hope you at least enjoyed me ramble for a few minutes through text.
