Decluttering my room has taught me something important about money.

I can't blame all of my finances on how I was raised. I did develop a shopping addiction in my early 20s. I had no good coping mechanism for the mental health issues I was having.

I've collected way too much stuff over the past 8 years. Musical instruments, books, art supplies, makeup, nail polish, cosplay stuff, clothes, and so on. I spent money I shouldn't have. I didn't have an entire house full of stuff... but my single bedroom was definitely cluttered.

Last year I discovered a bunch of videos on minimalism. Watching people clean their house and get rid of stuff has really inspired me to go through my own stuff. I also helped my roommate go through a ton of her stuff, since she's also a pack rat.

I made so many trips to goodwill. I sold a huge doll collection that, as a kid, I would have never imagined I'd be able to let go of. I sold some things on ebay and other resale sites. We had countless bags of garbage and I also gave some electronics to a recycling center.

The house is so much neater and organized and easier to clean. I don't think I have to worry so much anymore about turning into a hoarder. But most importantly, I've really put a cap on how much money I spend on frivolous things. I put my bills and savings first, and not that makeup palette or whatever I want. It also makes me appreciate what I already have even more, and I want to get my money's worth out of it. If I'm out shopping somewhere, I question more if I really need to bring an item home.

Minimalism and frugal living definitely can work together beautifully and I'm so glad I've discovered it. I was in such a bad place with my mental health and my finances, but now I'm off to a good start.
