Preface: I'm all for skincare and beauty products, I guess I'm a little skeptical about the effectiveness of a lot of them out there on the market but I'm sure if you find your "match" it's great to get a routine going and add some love to your skin/hair/nails/face/etc. Recently I've been trying out some of Klair's line, and the new Vegan Glow products, and they seem to be giving my skin a nice sheen. :)
Anyhoo, I've been really bothered by the amount of waste I see happening in the beauty industry, especially with all of these single-use products like sheet masks and moisturizing gloves. Maybe someone can argue that I'm wrong. But, it just seems really, really shameful. I've always skipped out on using any single-use products just because of how much I don't want to contribute to the popularity of them, but my friend gave me her moisturizing gloves pack tonight (the ones you wear for 15 minutes and then toss). I tried them out and I guess I can feel a tiny improvement in my hands now, but I'm sitting here thinking...did that moisturizer really need to be packaged that way? I just threw out the plastic package and two gloves lined with a softer material inside, why couldn't that product just been packaged in a large container that I could take the cream from and apply and then just let it sit? And then possibly recycle the container when it was used up after months of use? Other thing is, it would cost waaay less in bulk (companies almost always charge higher for smaller products).
I see single-use face masks and similar products in soooooo many stores now - all over Korea obviously, and in world-wide corporate chain places like H&M, Sephora, Ulta, Urban Outfitters, everywhere. I can't even imagine how much plastic it's adding up to.
We're living in a time where plastic is becoming a huuuuuuuge issue in our world. Just yesterday I was reading about the dead whale that was found with 13 pounds of plastic in its belly. All of the plastic trash that's ending up in the ocean is a true crisis at this point and it makes me sad thinking we're never going to see it cleaned up in our lifetime. When I lived in S Korea, I was really impressed by how well they sort their recycle and seem to care about where it ends up, unlike here in the States. I got in trouble once with a co-teacher because I didn't direct my students to recycle their leftover materials after an art project. So why is this Korean industry going in this wasteful direction?
It's Thanksgiving and I'm grateful for a lot of things today! I'm grateful that people care about taking care of their skin! And I hope I don't sound super Green Peace-y, it's just something that's really been bothering me and I'm wondering if anyone else has felt the same. :/ What are your guys' thoughts about this?
