I got Hollow Knight as an early unlock for the November monthly humble bundle- and $12 does not do this game justice. I ended up buying both soundtracks in support.
The art is beautiful, the gameplay is fluid, the enemies are challenging, and the music is eargasm quality.
I just defeated the Mantis Lords and the Soul Master, and it was absolutely thrilling. Both killed me on their second “mode” if you want to call it that. Did not expect two Lords to jump at once, and the soul master totally trolled me when I thought it was dead The mantis lords felt like my first big boss fight, and that moment when the knight draws his nail and faces them down gave me chills. After fighting through Mantis village, I HATED The mantis. After beating the lords and watch them bow in respect and all the mantis went passive, I was confused. Walk a little further to see the hundreds and hundreds Of corpses only to realize they have been protecting not just themselves, but everyone. I was in awe of the subtlety of the story-telling.
This just be one of the best games I’ve played In a long time. The mystery of the story, the small fragments of lore i gather that paints the backstory, the characters are interesting- it’s all amazing. I got a 20% off coupon from humble for some Hollow Night shirts and I’m totally going to use it.
I know I am speaking to the choir here, but dang. There are AAA studios that don’t make this kind of quality.
