r/beauty rules survey results and discussion

The results for the rules survey can be seen here.

I can't figure out how to get the "other" responses to show, so I will copy them below as well as breaking down the results. My analysis will be posted in a comment. Please feel free chime in with your thoughts!

Q1. Should self-promotion be allowed?

Yes 26.67%

No 56.67%

Other 16.67%

  • It should be allowed but limited; maybe like once a month or something similar. I don't want the whole feed being clogged up by ads for someone's shitty youtube channel
  • Once a week in a dedicated thread (like beautyguruchatter) with a description of their channel & link.
  • Subtle promotion only, if it is still a tutorial or useful info, if it has upvotes and comments it can be kep
  • Not explicit "check out/follow my insta" posts or advertisements, unless there's a way to filter these so people who don't want to see them can hide them, if posting a makeup look self promotion should be in comments accompanied with a product list, but not all the time.
  • Yes, but within reason. There should be a limit to how often you can promote your content vs. participating in the community in other ways

Q2. Should bloggers be allowed to share their posts with the community?

Yes, so long as it is beauty related, original content or not 30.00%

Yes, so long as it is original content 16.67%

Yes, but only if it is original content and includes a tl;dr 33.33%

No 13.33%

Other 6.67%

  • I think this should go in a weekly thread. We can post good blog posts or self-promote. Or maybe in the weekly self-promo over all thread?
  • I think people use this subreddit instead of viewing blogs, so no.

Q3. Should Youtube content be allowed?

Yes, so long as it is beauty related, original content or not 43.33%

Yes, but only if it is original content 10.00%

Yes, but only if it's original content and includes a tl;dw 33.33%

No 13.33%

Other 0.00%

Q4. Should people who want to post original blog or Youtube posts require mod approval prior to linking to their content and content creator flair?

Yes 72.41%

No 20.69%

Other 6.90%

  • Only if the videos are over a certain time limit
  • Bloggers shouldn't be allowed. There are many ways for them to promo their sites and blogs, and I say this as a business person with many sites and my own businesses

Q5. Should we allow linking to third party content?

Yes 16.67%

Yes, but only if OP facilitates a discussion about the content 50.00%

Yes, but only if OP includes a tl;dr about the content 16.67%

No 16.67%

Other 0.00%

Q6. Should image posts (OOTD, FOTD, nail art, etc.) require a product list?

Yes 70.00%

No 26.67%

Other 3.33%

  • Only if Author wants to

Q7. Should posts require content-appropriate flair?

Yes 50.00%

No 50.00%

Other 0.00%

Q8. Should personal posts be allowed? (Asking for recommendations, sharing personal experiences with a product/brand, etc.)

Yes, with no restrictions 83.33%

Yes, but only in a daily/weekly thread dedicated to such 16.67%

No 0.00%

Other 0.00%

Q9. Is there anything else you would like to suggest or that you think should be considered?

  • Spam is the reason why the community lacks links. Spammers realize this and go around the system by putting links in comments and in text posts. We should have an automod for that.
  • Any content related to MLM should not be allowed on this page. Lipsense, Mary kay, Younique, etc..
  • I think r/beauty should definitely emphasize advice, tips & discussion while restricting self-promotion
  • I think there should be weekly or day-assigned thread for skincare, makeup, beauty treatments and hair etc. I find hair is neglected a lot in beauty subs
