I was bored, so here's a list of every cut character from Marvel Vs. Capcom 3

First off, I cannot confirm the validity of this information as I have taken it mostly from the TV Tropes trivia section (From the "What Could Have Been" trope) and while I am able to identify believable sources to support this information, such as eventhubs and official tweets (I will link to all sources at the bottom) It's entirely possible this isn't fully true. While some may be, others might simply be rumors or inaccurate information. Some of the details are also off the top of my head, and my opinion will have drenched this list, so bear with me.

Each character is listed, including Capcom characters, along with the reason they were cut (If any). Bolded characters had significant development put into them (Conceptual or actual game assets) before the cut, while italicized characters were merely considered, with no real thought behind them before the cut.

Marvel Characters

  • Venom: Capcom requested permission to use Venom but Marvel didn't want him in the game. Niitsuma says you need to ask Marvel.

Deadpool and Shuma-Gorath almost shared the same fate, the former due to a translation error, and for some reason Capcom really really wanted Shuma in the game.

  • Silver Surfer: Since his board couldn't be properly incorporated into the engine, he fought without it. However, he looked too similar to Iceman, so he was cut.

  • The Fantastic Four: Yes, all of them. Capcom wanted to make them all 1 character similar to the Ninja Turtles in Injustice 2, but Marvel didn't let them, so they thought about using The Thing and Human Torch.

  • The Thing: Deemed too similar to Hulk.

  • Human Torch: He was actually a complete character, but he took up too much RAM and was cut (Possibly due to his fire VFX). Capcom even told Marvel about this, and they suggested Super Skrull as a replacement.

  • Doctor Octopus: Like Human Torch he was complete, even had a theme.Sadly, there were too many glitches with his tentacle moves.

  • Miles Morales (Spider-Man): There wasn't enough time to even begin development.

I like Miles, but it's kinda weird, being he debuted so recently in relation to Marvel 3's release. It's like throwing Kamala Khan in the MCU because she's popular, even though she's very new… Wait…

  • Black Panther was considered in the re-release, but cut for unknown reasons.

  • Juggernaut was considered, granted he has more distinguishable qualities from the Hulk. Sadly, never saw the light of day.

  • Cloak & Dagger: There many were ideas, but the 3v3 fighting game concept and all the assists would make Cloak (Who would be hovering over Dagger) visually clash with the assists. Wasn't worth the effort of forcing 2 characters into 1.

Shame, since the devs really liked them. Even making comparisons between them and Stand Users from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.

  • Multiple Man: It's logical to assume a game that has trouble with 2 characters in 1 couldn't possible handle a man able to multiply himself 1,000 times over. Regardless, they ran some tests to be sure. It can't.

  • Rogue: Her suggestive personality, coupled with the nature of her powers would have affected the age rating of the game.

(Y'know, even though we have Morrigan the goddamn succubus and a half-naked cat lady. But a frisky southern woman was too much)

  • Spiral: The dev team wanted her, but in the end she took too long to develop. Probably had to do with the fact she had 6 arms, multiple swords, and magic that the devs had to incorporate.

  • Psylocke: The team liked her and were itching to pit her against Strider Hiryu, but she wasn't considered popular enough.

I would've preferred her over X-23.

  • Spider-Woman: Her origin story, flight, and electrical powers were considered too similar to Trish.

They must've accidentally referenced Earth-1610 Spider-Woman, where she's a clone of Spider-Man, much like Trish is a clone of Dante's mom. In the prime universe she's still her own entity.

  • Squirrel Girl: The reason she was cut and Rocket Raccoon was included is just as goofy as them. She competed against Rocket for a spot. It all came down to a vote, on the spot, in a certain room with no warning. There were more raccoon people in the current room than squirrel people, so they went with Rocket.

  • Loki, being the "God of Mischief", the basis of his abilities weren't considered viable for a fighting game.

  • Mystique: Her most recognizable gimmick is to change appearance, and like Loki, not good enough.

I'm no comic nerd but I'm pretty sure that's not her only ability.

  • Vision: No reason given, just a joke about how overpowered he'd be.

  • Blade: Blade, badass vampire-human hybrid vampire hunter with a big-ass sword and guns was, surprisingly, deemed too similar to Dante, badass demon-human hybrid demon hunter with a big-ass sword and guns. Would've been great to see them fight though.

  • Kingpin didn't seem interesting enough, losing the spot to M.O.D.O.K.

  • Black Widow: Cut since the game already has enough "Gun people".

  • The Hood: Same issue as Black Widow.

  • Captain Marvel: She was known as "Ms. Marvel" at the time, and sporting a different black suit, making it hard to distinguish her from Storm's appearance and She-Hulk's personality. Here's an image of her old suit for reference.

Capcom Characters

Street Fighter

  • Gill hung on until the very end. Presumably, he had a character model and a couple of moves made, because Niitsuma stated that Gill xis so large and fast that it was weird for him to be rendered at the speed Marvel 3 was running at. Besides, Niitsuma didn't want too many Street Fighter characters. He was replaced by Nemesis for the place of "Giant Capcom dude", being much slower his rendering was more appropriate.

Would've rather had him over C.Viper.

  • Ingrid: I don't know why, but Niitsuma just. Absolutely. Did not want her in the game. All he said was "You again!?"

I personally think she's OK design wise. There are many better characters, but she's not the worst.

Darkstalkers

Many Darkstalkers were considered. Notable examples:

  • Jon Talbain: Niitsuma says that if there had been more time there would've been a 4th Darkstalkers rep, and it would've been Jon.

I personally would've had Demitri Maximoff as a 4th rep. Speaking of…

  • Demitri Maximoff: Midnight Bliss (Presumably his Level 3) would take too long to pass, and the team feared it'd be controversial. Possibly increasing the violence rating and drawing flack from the press.

For those who don't know, when performing midnight bliss Demitri likes to transform his victim into a young attractive woman to suit his fetish. Marvel would likely not want their characters gender-bent this way. He also literally breaths their blood out from their mouth. It take lots of effort to create a cheeky model for each individual character for the move in particular. To boot there are many existing characters that could not even conceivably be turned human, let alone female (Such as Sentinel, Shuma-Gorath, and Nemesis).

  • Anita: An adult Anita was considered and even had concept art drawn by the team, but Niitsuma really, really hated the idea, claiming that they've gone "Too far" and that "She's just a kid!"

Another cartoony character was probably a bit much, but she'd make Arthur and Viewtiful Joe fit better into the game

  • Donovon: Lost his spot to Hsien-Ko and Felicia.

Breath of Fire

The exclusion of many Breath of Fire characters stems mostly from the fact Capcom's overseas audience would likely not recognize them.

  • Fou-Lu: A japan fan-favorite. There were many ideas for him such as his energy sword, monster servants, and shapeshifting dragon form. But all of that would've taken too much effort. The fact no one overseas has even heard of him only put nails in the coffin.

  • Nina hung on until the very end, she even had her character model based off the 1st game and LVL 3 made (She sumnons all the other Ninas, like Mega Man's final smash on Smash 4) but she was scrapped in favor of Firebrand.

We could've had both though

  • Katt: A female staff user was desired, but lost in terms of priority. not like you've heard of her anyway.

Onimusha

  • Soki: The team felt he was too weak and slow of a character, and couldn't balance him in time.

  • Samonosuke: Legal issues prevented the use of this character

Red Earth

  • Mai-Ling: A female staff user was desired, but lost in terms of priority. Reasonable, be honest, have you ever heard of her?

  • Tessa: Despite pushing for her to rival Doctor Strange, Niitsuma couldn't convince the devs to include her.

Other

  • Chuck Greene (Dead Rising): Possibly to compliment Frank West. Near top of the list, but cut for unknown reasons.

  • Franziska von Karma (Phoenix Wright): Like Chuck, possible to compliment Phoenix Wright in the re-release. She was also on the top of the list, but cut for unknown reasons.

I knew nothing about this character until recently, and I really like her. Wonder how her playable would've been.

  • Generic Hunter (Monster Hunter): No particular gender given. Like the other 2 they were considered, but cut for unknown reasons.

  • X (Mega Man X): In a similar case to Miles Morales, there wasn't enough time to develop him. X was considered instead of the original Mega Man because his more adult appearance fit with Marvel characters more.

Odd since Zero was chosen over him in the final game. Priorities much

  • SonSon (Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Original): A female staff user was desired, but lost in terms of priority. Besides, have you ever heard of her?

  • Arieta (Cyberbots): Unsurprisingly, a naked lady piloting a robot might get the game marked for overly suggestive content.

  • Gene (God Hand): Unfortunately, he was pit against Frank West, who was chosen in favor of Gene.

There were over 150 female characters from both sides considered for the game aside from the ones already in, only a couple are listed. You just saw some of them in the list.

It's very nice to see all of these crazy cool and unexpected characters at the least considered for Marvel 3. Puts all of the work for even deciding on an all-star roster into perspective. You could make an entire fighting game with these characters alone. I want a bunch of these characters in the roster, but to keep it to 8 and say: Demitri, Tessa, Nina, Franziska, Human Torch, Black Panther, Blade, and Cloak & Dagger.

In one of the sources I read that had it not been for the tsunami and earthquake in Japan, as well as Marvel rushing them, they would've 8 extra characters. Which of these cut characters would you prefer to take those spots?
