For those of you who talked me into buying Hollow Knight.

You were totally right. It was absolutely the right decision, and I have to gush for a bit.

I’m the extreme kind of Patient Gamer who tends to wait until something is ten years old and going for less than five bucks in the bargain basement, but my wife bought a Switch from her sister to play Breath of the Wild a few months back, so I’ve been on the lookout for that distressingly rare beast, decent sales on Switch games. Hollow Knight was only five bucks off ($10 instead of $15), but it got such high praise around here I decided to bite the bullet and splurge just a tiny bit.

Long story short, now I feel like a sucker for dropping 99 cents on games with three-hour playtimes when I could have just bought Hollow Knight at full price and gotten way more value. I’ve sunk over 60 hours into my playthrough, and there are still whole sidequests, bosses, and endings that I’ve yet to really sink my teeth into. My wife’s been playing it obsessively as well, and we’re both in love. Her birthday’s coming up, and I’ve got her a plushy of the main character on its way (complete with plush nail). She’s going to love it. xD

The art, the music, the atmosphere, the characters, the gameplay... they’re all just so engaging. It‘s mind-blowing to me that it was made by just three people, and that they’ve been continually updating it so generously all this time. This is every bit as meaty as most AAA games I’ve played, for a fraction of the price.

I didn’t grow up with Metroidvanias, and now I feel like I’ve been missing out all this time. Are they all like this? Should I dig up an old copy of Super Metroid or Symphony of the Night? And what other modern games should I shuffle to the top of my wishlist to chase this feeling?
