Review for Kim's Convenience: family comedy about a Korean family in Canada

I just finished bingeing Kim's Convenience and overall I give this show an A for representation and quality. Being Korean myself it was incredibly relatable and on point. From the Father's outlook on Korean pride, the mother's relation to the church, it nails the korean- american experience on the head.

Briefly, the story is about the father and mother, who are immigrants owning a local neighborhood convenience store, and their dealings with their children and local neighborhood. The older brother who is a good looking strong asian male, had troubles when he was younger and is now trying to turn around his life. The daughter is depicted in a good manner as well, although she is sort of the typical asian ( good grades, good girl) she goes to school for art, and has a passion for it that her parents don't quite understand but are open. Overall the cast and stories are pretty diverse touching on various different subjects.

The show does depict asian american men in a very positive light. Jung and Kimchee are the two second generation asian men in the show. Jung is well built, good looking asian man that is known to be a ladies man. His character has a lot of good depth ( not one dimensional ) and his relationship with his family is incredibly touching. The journey he goes through from s1 and s2 is very compelling. Theres a will he / won't he hook up with his manager at work, who happens to be an attractive WF. Kimchee is his best friend and roommate and is also depicted positively. He's a little overweight but brings comedy to their interactions and is also shown to be very good with women.

The father and mother's relationship is great throughout the show. Again showing range in their characters and not some cookie cutter stereotype. They are both very endearing and are probably the biggest focal point of the show.

My only complaint about the entire show would be they do push the whole BMAF narrative more than any other type of relationship seen. Although it may be only in 2 or 3 episodes. I would have liked to seen the daughter date more Asian men and have that been a more positive experience.

Overall highly recommend.

First two seasons on Netflix now.
