My title is slightly misleading because I have never been unemployed. I am an art teacher and I was just hired by a district on Long Island, NY. I have, however, been (in two separate instances) in a less-than-desirable school and I have been in a state that I didn’t want to call Home.
My first job was my dream job, aside from the fact that I was living 4 hours away from my family and now-husband. After 3 years of applying, I was hired by the NYCDOE in the Bronx for a high school position, and was able to move closer to my family. In that time, I saw kids beat the shit out of each other with nail-embedded baseball bats. I have had an actual conversation with a parent about whether or not I’m sure their son was watching porn on his phone in my classroom. I’ve even been punched in the head as a casualty of a fight between two students. Needless to say, I wanted out. Well, 2 years and 40+ job applications later, I finally got hired.
Why am I posting my personal teaching history on here? It’s because I always rolled my eyes every time I saw another redditor say they finally got hired. I never thought I would have the opportunity to say that as well. This is a motivational post, for everyone like me who thought I’d be stuck in the same shit forever. Change can come about, and if you persist and don’t let the rejections get the better of you, things will turn around!
TLDR: I’ve applied to over 40 jobs and finally found somewhere worth working! Don’t lose sight of your goal, even if that’s super cheesy.
