You know the void after watching a really good show? I experienced that in the middle of watching Re Zero.

What the fuck happened to that show? It started off as a 7 or 8 out of ten adventure anime, then became a 10/10 nail biting murder mystery.

I mean holy crap I was glued to the screen, enjoying myself like I haven't while watching any show in years.

Then everything somehow went to shit. Around the 12th episode in a 25 episode series, the show goes full on Shonen. The plot goes from deep yet simple to dull and convuluted. Before every second I was leaning into my computer screen, after I was leaning on my elbow during the 50th character introduction in 2 episodes.

In episodes 12-18 the main character Subaru loses all the good will he builds in the first 12 episodes by going full on crazy pants. I get that there are story reasons for this, but they aren't revealed until the end. Without foreshadowing it just feels like these six episodes are just about watching a character lose at everything with no pay off.

In fact that seems to be what the whole series is about from then on. The writers introduce something Subaru wants and thus we want, then they take it away.

The worst offense is a full episode where Subaru and his companion Rem talk on the roof for 23 minutes. Rem is coaching Subaru out of dispair and self loathing. When she succeeds she spends 5 straight minutes of air time telling the audience why she's in love with this dude only to have him say those three magical words "I love Emilia". Okay... maybe stop her way sooner then. Maybe some point before she wins best girl of the decade award.

After the losing episodes the show devolves into a crap Saturday morning cartoon shonen. The arts crappier. Most of the episodes are meaningless fight effects and nothing anyone does invokes any actual tension.

What the fuck happened to the emotional thrill ride that was the first 12 episodes?
