So at long last the ride is over, no it didn't end the way a lot of us wanted, no we never got to see dinobabies, but it was a poetic ending.I jumped into DITF around episode 4 and loved it ever since, it's been an emotional roller coaster of highs and lows but time for an unbiased review.
LET'S START WITH THE CONS: ditf has one glaring issue the pacing is all over the place it's not as bad as others admittedly (looking at you gundam wing) but still went from very fluid through to 15 and then got sporadic afterwards. Some episodes wound up feeling quite rushed because of it 20, 21, & 23 especially got hit hard, 23 especially. Due to this things like the space battle in 23 felt VERY rushed and honestly a little underwhelming. how to do symbolism so the jian hit the nail on the head but it did seem like some others weren't really touched on that well or should've just been left out entirely such as The Golden Bough. VIRM while I personally didn't mind it that much, it definitely could've been handled better and foreshadowed a wee bit more. exposition dump okay so we all know what episode I'm talking about, I didn't mind 19 and the Dr Franxx backstory, but it definitely could've been handled better. miss use of some characters I'm gonna be blunt, the klaxosaur princess, a very cool character's only purpouse in the story was as a plot device and that kinda sucks. MitsuKoko while I personally loved themas a couple they did need a little bit more build up to their relationship, possibly hint at Mitsuru's feelings for her earlier as well. seemingly pointless episodes okay episode 8 was utterly pointless, for the life of me I can't see how it contributed ANYTHING to the story. not enough episodes this goes back to the pacing, there was too much crammed into some episodes (23) and the series would've greatly benefited from extending the episode count to maybe 25 or 26.
ON TO THE PROS: Oh boy are they're a lot. Let's start with the characters squad 13 is the driving force behind the show for me, we started out with some fairly blank slates and wound up with a phenomenal cast. Miku, Futoshi and Ikuno could've been touched on a little more but were still okay, Zorome and Mitsuru are the two secondaries that made the most impact on me and came off as changing the most among them. Zorome started as an energetic, cocky braggart lapdog, and ended as an energetic independent man. Mitsuru started as an arrogant asshole that I don't think anyone liked but he wound up coming to terms, softening up and becoming a great husband and father. Goro is best bro, he made no changes nor did he need to. Ichigo started as a leader who tended to let her emotions get the best of her, but wound up being a natural leader. Kokoro really developed from a timid girl into someone who really changed the game for the whole cast, she taught them to think of the future and if it wasn't for her I doubt they would be where they are. Animation & art were top notch all throughout what else can I say, every character had a great unique look to them and stood out among all the others. The fights were very well done, and the klaxosaur designs were also all pretty unique and cool (RIP snake-kun.) Okay okay onto the big one. HiroTwo okay so I may be a little bit biased when I say that they had the best romance I've seen since Spice and Wolf. They had such a great character dynamic in the first half with Zero Two being an outgoing take the reigns kind of girl and Hiro being the rather introverted boy that would follow her lead and support her, only to have them mellow out into supporting each other as genuine lovers. Zero Two is such a well written character, when we first meet her we see her as an outgoing femme fatale who has no worries in the world, but the more you look into her the more you realize how much she is hurting. Zero Two is for the majority of the fist half a big bundle of self loathing, she hate's looking herself in the mirror because she dispises what she is at her very core. But throughout the series she learns that apearences aren't all there is to being human, and in the process comes to accept herself and become truly human. Hiro is a very depressed slice of stale slice of bread when we first meet him and is quite introverted throughout the series, he lost what made him special and suffered for it. As the series progresses and he regains his memories of the girl he fell in love with, we see him become more assertive and grow as a person, yeah he's still a little stale at times but much less so than when we started. The sound track 10/10 best OST of the season and year period fight me.
Now to wrap up, Darling in the franxx was a mixed bag for sure but IT WAS BY NO MEANS BAD WHATSOEVER. It had it's lows and it had astronimical highs. But I gotta talk about the ending, and I think I'm gonna get some hate here. The ending was beautifully executed, it showed the way humanity rebuilt while Hiro and Zero Two fought so they wouldn't have to, the ending was beautiful. I see people talking badly about the fate of our main couple but they ended the way they lived, together. Their bodies may have been torn asunder and vaporized by the klaxo bomb, but they died together and their souls returned to the earth after seemingly hundreds of years. Their love is something that will not die, they were reincarnated, their souls will always find each other and fall in love all over again. I'm truly getting choked up while typing all this out, I personally love the hell out of this series and it's definitely going in my top 10. Darling in the Franxx ha been a ride and is a solid 7 out of 10.
My final thoughts, the series had unbelievably happy moments and soul crushingly sad ones. Seeing Kokoro and Mitsuru's baby was a truly beautiful moment. Ikuno putting her own well being aside to solve the rapid aging and give hope to all the parasites, the fist of the new humanity was a great send off for the destroyer. Zorome and Miku are still Zorome and Miku. What else can I say about this series other than that it was profoundly beautiful.
