AndyTauer & the Prince of Customer Experience

(Never read Harry Potter books, so I will spare you a Harry Potter style post.)

About a month ago, I received an order from Tauer for his magazine with a sample of Les 25 Années. I had also ordered a sample of L'Oudh, but it wasn't there. So I waited a while until I almost forgot, and then I emailed about what happened. Tauer replied back that yes, they had omitted the sample, it was coming my way, and apologized.

Today I got the missing L'Oudh sample -- as part of a complete sample pack containing the missing L'Oudh, Au Cœur du Désert, Lonesome Rider, Sotto La Luna Gardenia and Ue Rose Chypree. . A handwritten note said:

I am sorry about the missing oudh sample. Here it is with a bit extra. Enjoy! --Signed Andy Tauer.

This is a classic case study in how to turn a mistake into an engaged customer, upsell and grow sales from your base.

L'Air du Désert Marocain waa a great favorite in the summer of 2016, before my skin pH, bioflora or whatever, turned it into an unbearably sharp peppery mess that hurt my nose. LADDM for me was immensely calming, especially in areas of crowds (subways, buses). I hope Au Cœur can do the same. I have it on my left hand now and am eager to see how it dries down. I love the opening of lemony, fruity sherbet with flowers and spice, and the way my nose is perceiving the heart and drydown almost as sand. The spices don't seem too much for me. I am hopeful.

L:Oudh on me is essentially sitting in a shoemaker's store while he reheels my shoes, smelling the leathers, polishes, rubber and solvents (this is not unpleasant). On the counter, next to the piled up shoes, is a can filled with cut flowers, the one bright thing in this dim shop. I love PHI Une Rose de Kandahar, but never bought a bottle, just decant. It may be time for that bottle of PHI or Au Coeur.

It's rare for me to love more than one perfume from a house. One offs are more my thing. So when I own multiple perfumes -- from Serge Lutens and Guerlain --that house is something special. Tauer may be the third line to produce more than one love for me.

Tauer creates a positive buying experience greater than just having the product. It's a good memory, linked to his brand, and a sense of being close to the perfumer. He uses big business tactics. But without boutiques or SAs, the experience has to convey itself through mail. This ain't easy, yet he nails it. Color me impressed.

Tauer full bottles range from $95 to $165 for 50 ml, reasonable for artisan or prestige/luxury. He puts beautiful custom packaging and bottles in our hands, filled with unique, beautiful, well made perfumes. And he doesn't charge $100 more for a "full presentation." From inception, he must have considered presentation -- clothing his perfumes in relative luxury -- as part of thecost as goods, and so raised the initial money to produce that vision. As far as production, he's like a Keebler elf, ever industrious, an artisan in that he is the perfumer, marketing and production boss, and supply chain boss. Yet his Instagram feed is also his art, gardening, running -- the joy of living. Color me more impressed.

Andy Tauer converted a shipping mistake into good will, exposure to four more of his perfumes, and a potential sale. Enjoyment for me, Ka-ching for him. But it's obvious he loves his work.
