My Thoughts on Every Anime I've Watched

Hi r/anime! I started watching anime regularly around 2 and a half years ago (due to friends pestering me to watch Clannad), and I've really been enjoying myself. To show my shit taste, here's my opinion on every anime series or film I've completed (excluding stuff I watched as a kid and also most OVAs) since then, each in less than one sentence. I'll also give a score to each one, so before anything, here's my rating system:

A+ (Perfect) A (Fantastic) A- (Great) B+ (Very Good) B (Good) B- (Above Average) C+ (Average) C (Below Average) C- (Bad) D+ (Very Bad) D (Terrible) D- (Atrocious) F (Irredeemable)

Let's get this started!

5 Centimeters per Second (B)

A heartwrenching coming-of-age movie about long distance relationships that near completely fumbles its third act

Angel Beats! (D+)

An series that miserably tries to coherently tackle 26 episodes worth of plot and character development in 13 episodes

Aho Girl (B-)

An over-the-top comedy that shines most when creative with its gags, but sadly settles for tired tropes more often than not

Ano Hana (C+)

A potentially great heartwarming story about friendship that loses a lot of charm and impact to melodramatic characters crying every 5 minutes

Aria the Animation (B+)

An extremely relaxing slice-of-life series with atmosphere and charm in spades, but suffers from being too slow or too cheesy at times

Aria the Natural (B+)

A sequel that successfully dedicates itself to further fleshing out its world and characters, though while still having the same problem as the 1st season

Aria the Origination (A-)

Albeit feeling a bit rushed in the home stretch, still offers a satisfyingly cathartic culmination to the main characters' struggles throughout the series

Assassination Classroom (C+)

Satirical commentary on the education system whose ridiculous moments more often than not undermine its serious moments

Assassination Classroom 2nd Season (B-)

Honestly more of the same as the first season, but slightly elevated by a mostly fantastic final stretch of episodes

Charlotte (C)

A very good episodic fantasy show with entertaining characters up until it goes off the rails with its trainwreck of a plot

Clannad (C+)

A slice-of-life drama that tries too hard to make you cry, resulting in many emotional highs but just as many narrative lows

Clannad After Story (B-)

Bogged down by a lackluster first few arcs, but eventually turns into a fairly gripping drama about the strength of family

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (B)

Brought to life by a diverse ensemble cast, a well-executed fantasy action series of epic proportions, but severely hampered by its painfully unfunny comedy

Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash (B-)

A calm yet gritty fantasy series with great characters, but lacks an overarching sense of focus outside the cast's interactions

Haikyu! (B)

Albeit nothing special, still a well-executed sports show that easily makes you want to root for its characters

Haikyu! 2nd Season (B+)

More of the same as the first season, but even more entertaining, exciting, and ultimately rewarding

Hyouka (A-)

A cinematographically brilliant romance story that adeptly weaves together mystery, slice-of-life, and drama, but sometimes overdoes the latter

Hyouka Season 2 (A+)

Would be perfect just by existing (Kyoani pls T-T)

K-On! (B-)

A charming character-driven show, though with pacing and comedy that stretch itself way too thin

K-On!! (A)

A funny yet thoughtful coming-of-age story that perfectly captures youthful nostalgia

The K-On! Movie (A-)

An energetic but surprisingly mature sendoff to the main characters, although with iffy continuity in regards to Season 2

Little Busters! (C-)

A drama series with poorly written characters and a lack of focus, resulting in drama that doesn't feel earned

Little Busters! Refrain (C)

A potentially heartwarming and satisfying sequel with a plotline so ridiculously convoluted that it will probably destroy your suspension of disbelief

Little Busters! EX (C)

A disjointed collection of 3 story arcs where one is adorable, one is meh, and one is garbage

Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid (B+)

Despite the hit-or-miss humor, still a heartwarming tribute to the validity of unconventional families

Mob Psycho 100 (B+)

Though honestly just not for me, still a poignant story of self-identity framed through the most fluidly-animated, over-the-top, action setup possible

My Hero Academia (B-)

A shounen that has heart and energy in spades, but still falls victim to many of its genre's tropes and cliches

My Hero Academia Season 2 (B-)

A bombastically fun yet tightly written tournament arc leaves this sequel's second half struggling to match in focus and intensity

My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU (B)

A snarky, hilarious look into the social politics of teenagers, though unfortunately somewhat lacking a sense of direction

My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU Too (B+)

Though sacrificing some of its predecessor's cutting commentary, a sequel that successfully makes the transition into a gripping romantic drama

Noragami (B-)

An entertaining action show with charming characters, but a messy narrative and a forgettable (filler-y) final villain

Noragami Aragoto (A)

Probably the best shounen anime I've ever seen, amplifying all its predecessor's best qualities while also adding very tightly-written, interconnected narratives

One Punch Man (C)

An initially hilarious show that quickly wears its premise thin, but is mildly saved by its more serious moments

The Pet Girl of Sakurasou (B)

A surprisingly poignant romcom focusing on how we deal with failure, although unfortunately bogged down by fanservice in the first half

Puella Magi Madoka Magica (B)

An interesting examination of human nature, although usually not as clever or profound as makes itself out to be

Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Rebellion (B+)

A deeply disturbing yet ridiculously fun mindf*ck that begs for multiple viewings, despite being too bloated and over-the-top

Rewrite (D+)

At first a below-average harem fantasy show, but then devolves into an incomprehensible clusterf*ck in its second half

Rewrite 2nd Season (C+)

A generally more focused and interesting sequel, but is painfully dull during its non-fantasy moments

Serial Experiments Lain (A-)

Disturbing yet captivating social commentary on identity, but occasionally goes off on a dull tangent with its exposition

The Shape of Voice (A-)

A delicate, sensitive piece on depression and the multiple facets of communication, but with a script that doesn't make full use of its 2-hour runtime

She and Her Cat: Everything Flows (A)

A creative, sometimes heartbreaking perspective into the struggles of adulthood, all told under 30 minutes

Shirobako (B+)

A touching (and informative!) love letter to the anime industry, also indirectly resulting in more than a few cheesy moments

Sound! Euphonium (A-)

A beautifully animated series about the value in (re)discovering and pursuing your passions, slightly hampered by occasional melodrama

Sound! Euphonium 2 (A-)

Some narrative stumbles aside, still probably the most emotionally satisfying character drama I've ever experienced

Spirited Away (A-)

Abwonderful fantasy story that makes its world come to life with unparalleled detail, but unfortunately rushes a bit through its climax

Steins;Gate (B)

A sci-fi series that absolutely nails its time travel aspect, slightly making up for the uselessness or blandness of some of its characters

Steins;Gate: Load Region of Deja Vu (D+)

An unnecessary, even contradictory sequel devoid of the wit and charm of its predecessor

Sword Art Online (C-)

An interesting concept doomed by terrible execution and characters that are either annoying or totally expendable

Sword Art Online II (C-)

An even more unbearable sequel, where tellingly, the only good portion is the arc where most of the characters are replaced with new ones

Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale (C+)

A surprisingly fun and touching movie if you can turn your brain off, as nearly all its plot points don't hold up under scrutiny

Tamako Market (B)

A slice-of-life series that mostly overcomes its weak plot through its overwhelmingly warm sense of community

Tamako Love Story (A+)

The perfect teen movie for its beautiful, delicate portrayal of young love and the fear of growing up

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 (C+)

A fairly engaging disaster show with only mediocre production values and unfortunately too little story to carry it through 11 episodes

Tsurezure Children (C+)

A pretty charming ensemble romcom, albeit one where only half the couples are entertaining or interesting

Violet Evergarden (B+)

A poignant character study that's occasionally too heavy-handed for its own good

Your Lie in April (B-)

A drama (comedy?) show so problematic yet so damn pretty that I kinda liked it anyway

Your Name (B)

A beautiful, oddly melancholic romance story with a unique take on the body-swap genre, but with rather bland characters

Series and Films I'm Looking Forward to Watching:

Amagi Brilliant Park A Place Further than the Universe Baccano Cowboy Bebop FLCL Kyousougiga Land of the Lustrous Little Witch Academia Millenium Actress My Neighbor Totoro Nichijou Only Yesterday Redline Revolutionary Girl Utena Sound of the Sky The Tale of Princess Kaguya The Tatami Galaxy Tsuki ga Kirei Usagi Drop Wolf Children

Some Closing Thoughts:

Welp, there you have it. Feel free to roast me for my hot takes. Bear in mind though that these opinions are in a constant state of flux, as rewatches can greatly change my opinion of a show, and I haven't watched a lot of these in a while. For example, my recent rewatch of Angel Beats! brought its rating down from a B- to a D+. Meanwhile, Tamako Market rose from a light C to a strong B (seriously considered a B+) for me during my recent rewatch of it. Genres also play a big role, as I'm really more of a slice-of-life type of guy than anything else. Not that I don't enjoy shounen (for example), as Noragami is a favorite of mine. It's just a much tougher sell for me, which is probably why I gave Mob Psycho 100, when it would probably be an A- if I had an inclination to the genre.

Wow, I've gone off on quite a tangent here, but all I'm really trying to say is please don't kill me for giving both seasons of MHA a B- haha

Also I sure am glad I've never watched an anime that I'd genuinely call irredeemable (aside from the specials for Sword Art Online which I couldn't even finish an episode of)
