I'm a newbie trying to dip my toes into guitar and classical guitar with a very limited background in violin. I'm also a healthcare worker and martial arts nut.
I don't think nails are or will ever be an option. I'm banned from acrylic nails for work, tear through gloves with normal nails, and they are a substantial safety hazard for me and others in martial arts.
I can kinda pluck with very short nails if I position my hand a certain way but my hand and wrist form a straight line with hooked fingers and my understanding is this is not what I want.
Can I make do without them well enough? Should I investigate finger picks? I'm only playing for my own enjoyment and don't ever really plan on performing.
