Don't get me wrong I did not think it was terrible or anything but it has a MAL score higher than both seasons of Fate Zero which I find quite ridiculous. Now I know art is subjective, and every part of the Nasuverse is sacred to somebody but Lost Butterfly was my least favorite Ufotable Fate adaptation except for Emiya no Gohan (which is sacred of course). Is it just new movie hype or did you fall in love with this movie?
Let me go back, I like most secondaries, love Fate Zero (anime), I not only think it as a great piece of Fate media, I think it is a great story to show non-Fate fans, or even Fate haters. It is a great anime even as a standalone, it's almost perfect. Almost. My one big issue with Zero and a lot of people's issue are the last two episodes or so, and I think I narrowed this down to a fan needing knowledge of what happened during the Third Holy Grail War to understand the end of Fourth. The anime in its hundreds of minutes, plenty of it already on exposition, couldn't have somebody describe what happened at the end of the Third War? Not even the eponymous important thing, that had plenty of scenes. Fate Zero is still great, but you still need a google search or a friend for the last two episodes to make it seem less like a dog is being shot. People will disagree to this as well, but hey subjectivity.
Next like a lot of secondaries watched UBW (anime) (though I had watched Deen Stay Night and UBW (movie) beforehand so I unfortunately become tired of Gil being a final villain by this point.). I think lesser of UBW (anime), it has some pacing problems, lack of focus on Saber (yes, I know not her route, but we still don't know the specifics of Artoria's life in a Ufotable adaptation, give me something, I mean Caster got a half episode flashback), lack of focus of Illya, (not her route I know, but i still think Illya is more important to every route than Tokiomi was in Zero, or else she is just a weird loli hanging about, but we still aren't getting much) but other than that I didn't much of a problem with the anime, most loose ends were tied, the epilogue was great, wonderful thematic followup to Fate Zero (even if it should be the other way around.)
HF (movies) and more specifically Lost Butterfly has a bigger problem, continuity lock out. It seems the HF movies were made for VN players and like most criticisms of any adaptation, it needs to stand on it's own. I enjoyed Presage Flower more than Lost Butterfly because even though I already know it has changes from the original route, I think these changes were the better for a film. We see Assassin kill Team Caster and Lancer. It provides a bit of action, suspense, and a break from the tension being built. It solidifies this arc as the darkest and even though I joked it was the NTR route, I guess it actually is. I liked the extended flashback of Presage Flower, it helps get the heroine in mind and provide context for the other routes as well. I liked the UBW (anime) stole FSN's prologue (though I could be wrong about this) because it worked for being the first Ufotable FSN route at the time and it worked with UBW's focus on Rin. I wish Presage Flower had ended twenty minutes later with the "glorious" rain Shirou walking scene, but I am probably alone in that. It's a quieter film that helps set up the trilogy well, though it only has like one joke in it (Something about the Spicy Tofu did not make it as funny as the VN scene I saw on youtube). Speaking of that scene, I know Kotomine is Lancer's master, but a new viewer wouldn't, and either way I wouldn't notice Kotomine's behavior as desperate, unless it isn't? Whatever still liked Presage Flower.
Now onto Lost Butterfly. we wonder around for twenty minutes, Shirou shuffles through rain, he's so sexy, whatever. Now things are getting weird and I don't know why people are doing what they are doing. Illya jumps on Shirou because what hatred. Is Illya actually nuts? Kotomine helps with Sakura, don't really know why, just kill Sakura, Rin, and Shirou at this point, have Gil help he isn't scared of Faker-kun even though he should be. Whatever Sakura needs to live or something, for reasons, reasons that I am sure will be explained in this movie. Reasons that probably rhyme with Schmolly Nail. Shinji being stupid, library fight, Rider's hot, Rider's Medusa, good shit. Kariya talks to Illya good shit, good Servant fights (not the best imo, but a lot of people think that.) Sakura leg's are moving on their own, Sakura is our body pillow fantasy, good shit. Garcher is Gar. Saber is super kawaii desu chan (goth girl edition) Shirou gets that orangutan grip we all want with our Sakura body pillow. Rin and Illya act like side girls in a harem anime because that is what they are. Sword of Zeltretch, really I am being locked out of this movie when I have seen every last Ufotable work!!! Sakura has bad dreams, eats some fish, eats Blondie because like usual he is being dumb, good shit. Okay so now Kotomine is going start doing stuff because he is down to himself? No? Next movie you say? Alright I guess. Taiga why you here? And she's gone. Illya why are you here? Tell me something. Zouken what were you doing those other routes? Tell me something. Rin I know it's not your route but you are still going to be the compelling three-dimensional character you have always been, no okay. Okay, end of the movie, Shinji you have always been portrayed as this boy failing under the corrupt wants of his family surely you will demonstrate something that makes you redeemable, oh okay you are not redeemable at all in any route, okay Nasu, tru. Why is Sakura so strong? What do you mean wait for the next one, what do you mean read the VN, what VN?
In conclusion, I know I am a dirty secondary, but I was locked out of Lost Butterfly, everyone's character in this movie was oh shit Sakura! I don't know why Sakura is such a big deal, but it probably rhymes with Moldy Kale. I never even hated Sakura, Zero revealed controversially that she was fucked up, and UBW kept her in the back to suprise me with both her warmth and her wrath. I didn't like this movie much. It felt all over the place and nowhere at the same time. Rin establishes a relationship with Shirou in UBW to curtail his martyr tendencies but also because she is attracted to his boneheadedness. Sakura just wants the bone of his sword and it seems the reason is worms. She cares for Shirou when he is hurt, but so does every woman in his life. I wanted to like Sakura, but she is so many kinds of messed up, and the good that is there comes off as generic goodness, so I don't get a picture of her besides a victim of circumstance. She does get jealous of Rin, but that may have just been the libido. I am getting the point of HF is how fucked up the situation is, I don't see much of a connection between her and Shirou besides carnal on her end, and a different kind of hero complex on his end, and maybe that is the point, maybe the relationship is doomed and flawed from the beginning like Romeo and Juliet. Still, most other characters got shafted hard, too hard for my taste. It looks great like always, the few fights we got, great like always, I want to see the next one but not as much as before. I rate it 7/10 or only slightly lower than most of Ufotable's FSN work, but still. I know the FSN route hasn't been adapted by Ufotable and would answer and address many of my problems and concerns, but they worked with what they had and made Zero and UBW work off each other, but not so much with HF. Did you love this movie?
