Here back again for the 20-somethingth year in a row is none other than ACL's unofficial mascot, AatW. Meet everyones favorite Texas western swing band, Asleep At The Wheel. What is western swing you might ask? Well, imagine that every music genre had a orgin, a parent genre so to speak. Western swing is country musics grandfather genre, the OG of country bands. Seriously a great trip in time to listen to them at a modern day festival, its just a setting you cant get anymore.

Since the early '70s, Asleep at the Wheel have been keeping the sound of Western swing alive. Frontman Ray Benson has been at it for 4 decades keeping this ode to classic country roots alive and strong. He does an amzing job reviving the freewheeling, eclectic sense of Western swing attiude and tune of godfather Bob Willis. Straight Texas style toe tapping diddys, led by fiddles and bar slides, its really such a treat to hear even if just for 10 minutes. They have not only preserved classic sounds that had all but disappeared from country music, but they've been able to modernize it into a living, breathing art form today. The band has between 8-11 musicians, cycling about 80 various members over the years, but Ray Benson is still here especially with his residency at ACL.

Favorites of mine are Hot Rod Lincoln, Mile And Miles Of Texas, Stay All Night, (Get Your Kicks On) Route 66, and The Letter (That Johnnie Walker Wrote)

Now to dive a bit into another Austin gem, here is Pike and Sutton. Reminiscent of late 90s Pop rock this little rock outfit is the brain child of Patrice Pike, the founder to a little known band out of Austin called Sister 7. Looking at the story it seems Sister 7 had great potential, however was the collateral damage due to internal record compamy politics. The issue killed the band and Patrice was left only with Waybe Sutton as a musical companion. Therefore Pike and Sutton was born along with thier own record label which was created to avoid such disasterous ends to bands with promising futures. Pike dubbed it ZainWayne Records to pay homage to her lost band from before.

Such a shame too, Sister 7 had such a bittersweet sound Pike seemed to pick back up that greasy earnest pop rock sound that helped shoot people like Alanis Morrisette to fame. But maybe with more elbow-grease garage rock grip. I can espically hear this on Pikes song I Wont Give Up which really radiates this relatable melancholy introspective search for strength.

In other cover videos on Youtube you can see Pike is a huge fan of the classics like Led Zepplin and Cream. I recommend Pikes cover of White Room by Cream, who just nails this golden oldie easy. Out of her personal songs This Is the Trip and Bottle Rocket are more of a fiery thunderclash of rock to compare to her other reflective melodies.
