Ok, I understand that from the teaser, the new Lion King movie is pretty much a scene for scene recreation of the original movie. Yes, there’s probably not much new dialogue, new characters or new scenes, and people can throw out the notion that this is just a “cash grab”. But I think that term completely undermines the effort that went into this. Like any art form, there’s many dimensions to a movie, and rather than tell a new and ambitious story, Disney has decided to absolutely nail the presentation and feel of the movie. This level of animation and the environments cant result from something that was thrown together to make a quick buck; its the product of years of effort. To my knowledge, this type of polish and realism in a CGI movie is unheard of from any other company. It’s easy to sweep under the rug by saying “oh yea that’s just par for the course for Disney”, but I think they really went above and beyond to elevate this experience.
In addition, there’s no doubt that the Lion King is a timeless and charming story. So why not modernize the movie and make it available to the next generation with today’s level of production quality? I don’t think this is just meant as a nostalgia trip, but as a genuine effort to bring an old classic to today’s standards and share that magic with the next group of kids.
In other mediums, like video games, people clamor for remakes of old favorites. And yes, some remakes really are hastily put together and complete cash grabs, but from the teaser trailer, this movie is definitely not that. A tremendous effort has gone into the CGI and I think this is the most justice you can give the Lion King while staying true to the original.
I get it: Disney has started churning out a lot of “live action” remakes and people are frustrated by it. But taken in a vacuum, I think from what we’ve seen, this movie is wonderful and the animators have put a ton of love into it. “Live action” is definitely not an appropriate word for it, but I hope that controversy doesn’t take away from all the movie looks to have done right.
