FAQ

What’s the official policy on polish list enforcement?

All nail art and manicure posts on RedditLaqueristas are required to list polishes and products. The rule has been in the subreddit sidebar for years, but as of June 2, 2018, the rule is officially implemented and enforced.

All submissions of colored or decorated nails must include a list of polishes and products. The list must be written within the Reddit post. There is a time limit of 24 hours to add your list. After 24 hours posts lacking a polish list will be removed, without additional messages or warnings to the user who submitted the post.

Okay, but why enforce this at all?

  1. The majority of RedditLaqueristas want polish lists. Lists help everyone find new polishes and ask people for recommendations or reviews. It makes RedditLaqueristas a better resource for us all. We can learn more from each other this way, and it’s easy to give advice or troubleshoot problems when products are included in the post. Plus, new lacqueristas get to discover what polishes and brands are tried and true, while seasoned lacqueristas get clued in to new, different products they may love.
  2. We all want to see more nail art. Product lists are the standard in other beauty subreddits. New visitors are more likely to subscribe if we fit the expected subreddit style of including product lists. More subscribers = more contributors = more awesome nail art submissions for everyone to enjoy!
  3. Stolen nail art is less likely to be posted. Polish lists help keep people honest about posting their own work and crediting other’s art. (It’s okay to post someone else’s photo if it inspires you, but that must be explained in the post — always with attribution, preferably with a link to the original source.)

Does my post title need to list the polish names?

No! Adding your list as a comment is perfect. For nail art with a lot of colors and products, a comment can be more practical than a long title!

What if I link to my blog or other website that has the product list there?

Still list it here. It’s 100% okay to link to your other website with additional details, but posts to RedditLaqueristas must have the list of polishes and products somewhere within the Reddit post itself.

Don’t worry. When your nail art is compelling and someone wants a tutorial, they will click through! Nevertheless, the majority of users have made it clear that they do not appreciate being forced to visit another site simply to find out what polish you used.

What if my nails were done in a salon or by someone else?

We love nail art from all the amazing, talented nail techs out there, and your mods get it! As a customer you may not know what the artist used to create your mani. If you don’t know the products for these reasons, please add Salon flair to your post and comment that the product list is unavailable. If you can, please try to note the brand the next time you visit your salon or nail tech. Note to Nail Techs: If you are posting your work on a client, salon flair isn’t enough because you know how you created them! Please include your products.

But what if the polish is hard to find, only sold online, or not available for most people to buy?

Still list the products. Even if the product is discontinued, only available in one country, an ancient polish, a professionals-only product, or otherwise impossible to get, still list it.

Can I add links to the polish or other supplies I used?

Sure. Direct links to online stores or official brand webpages are totally acceptable, but the polish brand and shade name must be in your Reddit post, so that users are not required to click through to the online store. However spamming links or posting content for direct financial gain will not be tolerated.

What if I can’t read the bottle or the label is missing?

Add a link to your photo of the bottle. You’d be surprised by how resourceful lacqueristas can be when they want to track down a polish!

What if the polish never had a name? My label isn’t missing, but it doesn’t have much identifying information.

This does happen! It’s especially common with nail polishes that come in sets with no names or shade numbers. Note the brand, set, and purchase location if possible. Example

“Light pink polish: Beauty Moment brand — No name/number, came in their Nudes set at Marshalls”

What if my polish is a custom color I mixed myself?

No problem! Just add flair or a comment. If it’s a simple combination you made on the spot, please list what you used. If it’s frankenpolish you made ages ago with a bunch of different things, don’t worry about it. If the polish was made using a purchased polish creation kit (like the ones that come with polish base and pigments to add in) please list the kit.

What if I can’t remember where I got my other supplies or what their official names are? (Loose glitters, vinyls, rhinestones, striping tape, foils, etc.)

It happens! List all the products you can identify, and add notes when applicable. Here are some common examples that would work:

I used craft paint for the purple and blue details. Magikolor acrylic paint, no shade names.”

“Assorted beads and caviar, probably purchased from [Brand] or [Store]”

“Striping tape came in a kit with brushes and other supplies bought on Amazon”

“Water decals that I’ve had laying around for a long time. I think I may have bought them from [store], but I’m not sure.”

“Iridescent hex glitter bought at a craft store a decade or more ago, no idea where it came from!”

Is there an official, required format to post my polishes?

There’s no official format. If you’re using a lot of different polishes and products, it's helpful to note the actual color or type of polish before the brand and shade name. Here is a suggested, but not required formatting example for a mani with a lot going on:

Base coat: Orly — Bonder

White creme: OPI — Alpine Snow

Red creme: Cirque Colors — Red Hook

Red glitter polish: Revlon Gel Envy — 615 Gambling Heart

Red multichrome: POP Polish — Fire Slick

Top coat: SuperChic Lacquer — Marvel Liquid Macro Top Coat

Striping tape: Not sure? It was included as a freebie in some polish order, but I can't remember the store.

Can I help when I see posts without a list?

Yes! Please do report posts without polish lists. User reports are incredibly helpful to make sure those posts don’t slip through the cracks.

Thank you again for your support in implementing this. For anything related to polish lists, comment away in this thread! (If you have other suggestions or concerns that you’d like the mods to address, which aren’t about this rule change, please send us ModMail or create a new post!)
